Since 2004, Instant Shade has been proud to play a role in one of Australia’s most iconic sporting events: the Australian Open. What began as a single order for a few large umbrellas to shade players in a rest area has grown into a trusted, long-term partnership built on quality, reliability, and a shared commitment to excellence.
This year marks over two decades of involvement with the tournament, and 2026 was our biggest year yet. With more than 500 umbrellas installed throughout the Melbourne Park precinct, our presence was felt at every corner of the Grand Slam venue — from major arenas to sponsor activations and family areas.
A Long-Standing Partnership
Our journey with the Australian Open began with something unique: oversized, heavy-duty umbrellas customised with the event’s branding. They offered respite from the heat for players outdoors and immediately demonstrated how commercial umbrellas could elevate both comfort and visual impact.
Year after year, that relationship deepened. Today, Instant Shade — alongside our sister company, Instant Marquees — delivers a broad range of both event umbrellas for hire and branded umbrellas for purchase to meet the varied needs of the tournament organisers, sponsors, and hospitality providers.

We supplied a wide variety of commercial-grade umbrellas across the site:
- Nova HD Umbrellas: These giant, heavy-duty commercial umbrellas are some of our most robust products. Several were installed near Rod Laver Arena, featuring Kia branding, providing welcome shade for fans relaxing on the surrounding grass hills. Others were used in Ballpark, the family-friendly entertainment zone near the city entrance.
- Cafe Series Umbrellas: In three sizes (2m square, 2.8m octagonal, and 3m square), these versatile umbrellas were deployed throughout the precinct, including hospitality zones, queueing areas, and sponsor activations. Their availability in a range of colours and the ability to customise them with logos makes them a go-to choice for branded umbrellas at high-visibility events like this.
- New for 2026: We provided eye-catching bright blue branded umbrellas for Altos Tequila, helping the new brand make a bold visual statement. We also worked closely with ANZ to deliver 24 precisely colour-matched umbrellas used at the entrance to the newly rebranded ANZ Arena.
- Sustainable Re-skinning: In areas like Garden Square and TAHQ, we re-skinned dozens of umbrellas for the Balter Beer Bar and surrounding hospitality areas. This allows us to refresh the look annually without replacing the frames — a cost-effective, environmentally responsible solution that aligns with modern event sustainability goals.
More Than Just Umbrellas: Full-Service Support
Our involvement goes far beyond supply. We provide:
- Bump-in and bump-out services: Including delivery, installation, and pack-down, with storage and maintenance of umbrellas between events.
- Daily inspection and safety certification: Every umbrella on site (including those not supplied by us) must meet strict engineering standards. Our team certifies and tags each umbrella after ensuring it is properly weighted and safely installed.
- Ongoing on-site monitoring: Throughout the tournament, our dedicated team inspects every umbrella daily, checking for any movement, damage, or non-compliance caused by wind or crowd activity.

Behind the Scenes: Challenges and Expertise
Operating at an event of this scale presents unique challenges. Timing is everything — the tournament start date is immovable, so installation must be precise, fast, and well-coordinated. Melbourne’s summer weather adds another layer of complexity, with heat and high winds both potential risks. Our team’s professionalism and responsiveness have been tested (and proven) many times, especially when last-minute adjustments or emergency repairs are needed on-site.
